Data scientist

Sorry! We're no longer taking new applicants for this role.

We are looking for an amazing data scientist to join our team at Red Guava. This doesn’t mean you need to have 5+ years experience in the industry, we care much more about skill and passion than credentials.

Who we are

Red Guava is a small, bootstrapped and profitable software company based in Melbourne, Australia. We love building software and working with talented people.

We build a product called Cliniko. Cliniko makes life easy for Allied Health professionals by handling appointment scheduling, storing treatment notes and a bunch of other things too. It is already used globally by tens of thousands of people every day.

How we work

We work smarter, not harder. We think work/life balance is important and we work a 30 hour week as standard (you still get a full-time pay; it’s a full-time position).

Some of us work in our office in Melbourne, but not all (we have team members in the UK, USA, Canada, Poland, Brazil, Portugal, France, Malaysia and New Zealand). We want to hire the best person available, not just the best person within a 10km radius.

If you want to know more about how we work, Joel gave a talk recently about it.

Who you are

You are a data scientist extraordinaire!

You love data, you love numbers and you're very interested in business. People get annoyed at you because you ask too many questions. You just consider it delightfully inquisitive.

You have strong maths and statistics skills. Even more importantly, common sense and logic are some of your best tools.

Getting answers is one thing, but answers that you can act upon, that's when you get excited.

Here's the tricky bit though, we'd love you to have some engineering skills too! If you can implement your own systems for getting the data, it's going to be better for you and us.

You’re excited by the opportunity to make a real difference in peoples lives with your work. You want to have fun too!

What you'll work on

Let's be honest, you'll know what you should work on better than we do. Of course we have some ideas on things that might be useful, or we wouldn't be hiring, but ultimately we expect you to know how your time is best spent.

A few things you'll likely be doing are: - Using the data in Cliniko help improve the experience for new customers - Helping existing customers get the most out of Cliniko - Knowing when things aren't going well for our customers so we can lend a helping hand

A lot of this will probably require building models which can predict outcomes so that we can be more proactive with our support for customers.

You'll also need to be setting up tools that make it easy to get the data. We do not have this currently, so this will be part of your role. We'll help of course!

Ultimately, you'll be helping us make better business decisions, and helping our Cliniko customers do the same.

In summary

Let’s be clear, you need to be seriously amazing. We are a small team and we want to keep it that way. We will offer you the best job you have ever had with plenty of perks (we don't list them here, but I promise they are good), however we do expect you to be super-talented.

You should be absolutely passionate about making a difference to our business and to our customers. You should take pride in your work and be excited to measure the benefits from it.

Here's your chance to work on challenging and interesting problems with a bunch of talented people. If this sounds like you, we hope to hear from you soon!

How to apply

Write Joel a nice email to apply for this job.

In your job application, please tell us what you think might be a useful bit info to grab out of Cliniko. Just one thing and not too lengthy!

Please don’t send a resume; we will print it out and burn it and you'll feel bad about all the wasted paper.

Being creative is always looked upon favourably.
